Follow-up Comment #1, bug #9783 (project wesnoth):

The save files have a problem that is the root cause. They refer to the old
name for the halberdier and hence have no valid unit type.
I have done a bit of testing and have seen crashes in add_modification after
defending generate_traits against the problem.
I'll see if I can add a few checks to get the sample same game to load, but I
may put in an assert.
At the very least I'll add a log for the bad unit type name.
Once I do this I'll get the rev back in.
