Follow-up Comment #3, bug #3870 (project wesnoth):

The point would be aesthetics.

And there are several hex-shaped maps already in use, and with the new
terrain architecture it should be possible to do maps of any shape that still
look good. (Even if the editor currently doesn't do it, as you say, that is no
justification. The map editor needs more love anyway.)

And what do you have against wacky-shaped maps?

Lastly, there was a script already in existence to do this (probably long
lost, if not saved by svn), 'twas only a question of re-implementing that in
C++ for the editor.

In short, I think this request makes perfect sense, and the desired
functionality would complement well the available mirroring functions.

Please revert to status none.

As to the implementation, the _ideal_ solution would be that the user was
allowed to _select_ the center hex in relation to which the rotation should
occur.

If you want to extend on this request, selecting also the _radius_ of
rotation (in addition to the center hex) to allow for easily creating partial
intentional distortions on the map.

--

A further extension would be to _mirror_ the map _through_ the center hex.
:-)

As a general note, esr:

I agree with some of your judgements as to whether a feature is worth the
maintenance burden (cf. bug #9567, I was the Anonymous).

However, I'd like to ask that you be somewhat less zealous in your desire to
"clear" the bug database. In short, I see you prepare closing some sensible
feature requests, sometimes on spurious grounds, perhaps only because you
personally feel it is not likely that any dev would work on the feature in
the near future. (Please accept my apology if I misrepresent your intentions,
but this is the feeling I sometimes get.)

Closing sensible feature requests only because they don't "currently" seem
probable to be implemented "soon(ish)" has two effects:
- It forces people to re-file requests, when someone again thinks of a useful
feature _and_ there is no longer a report open for that. (This has the side
effect of filling the db with (closed) duplicates.)
- It is frustrating for people like me, who take the trouble to submit
thought-out feature requests, and having to justify (or re-justify) the issue
at hand. Please bear in mind that it is usually the same people who bother to
produce detailed enough _bug_ reports (as opposed to f.r.:s) and thus
contribute to the quality of the game.

Further, I hope you are aware that the running policy for Wesnoth bug
management has been that "if a feature request has been open for long, it
simply means that no developer has yet had the time to look at it". Somewhat
too zealous closing of old (but useful) feature requests runs counter to this
policy.
