Follow-up Comment #5:

As the original submitter says, the translated strings should be shortened. 
The dialog box has limited space, so the game engine cannot even in principle
pack arbitrarily long translations into it, let alone in practice.  Working
around that limitation is part of the job of translating.

This may change if we get a real layout engine someday.
