Follow-up Comment #2, bug #11197 (project wesnoth):
I was wrong, generate_gender() never gets called in this case. The problem
is that in the constructor used for interpreting SingleUnitWML (unit.cpp line
180) the unit type is not available, so generate_gender() can't be called to
set the gender field.
