Follow-up Comment #1, bug #11570 (project wesnoth):

Even without the ability to animate both units simultaneously, it would be
useful to be able to provide a filter for specifying the second unit so that
the animated unit would face and target the proper direction. Otherwise, if
you wish to animate a unit as if attacking an adjacent unit, you have to
figure out the proper direction in WML and set the unit's .facing
accordingly, which is kind of a hassle. It'd be more convenient if the target
unit could just be specified directly with a SUF.
