Should be fixed in SVN.
This problem seemed to be related to the AI's "support" functionality. It
tries to "support" other units that are defending villages. In this case, it
considers the leader to be in need of "support" and so the units sit around
on the castle, since that is favorable terrain, thinking they'll come defend
the leader if he's attacked.
This whole support logic doesn't seem to work out very well, so I've gone
ahead and disabled it by default. It can be enabled by setting
support_villages=yes
