Follow-up Comment #4:
It turns out that the calls usually *are* getting inlined -- observing the
contrary was a side effect of profiling. In the absence of any reasonable
way to benchmark the increased efficiency of a faster comparison function
against overhead due to using shorts rather than ints elsewhere, I'm
scrapping this.
