Details:

There is cracking sound and after that no sound at all, and CPU usage goes up
to 100% or close to that.

If the sound sampling rate is set to 22050 or the game is started with the
"--nosound" flag, there is no such problem. I have seen it on three separate
machines - Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 (2x) and Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix. Haven't
seen this on my Gentoo box, though (not using Pulseaudio there).

Maybe it is possible to autodetect this and switch the sampling rate?
