The error message is rather uninformative and perhaps even wrong. The most
important part is the resolution, which is (should be) supported down to at
least 1024x600. And down to 800x480 with the --smallgui switch.
Due to the resulotion preferences code being rather spread out though, this
works fine on startup, but not when switching between fullscreen and
windowed, until you've explicitly set the proper resolutions in your
preferences while using --smallgui.
As a temporary workaround, use the following switches (you may not need all
of them)
--smallgui -r1024x600
