Details:

currently, hotkeys can only be placed by using C++ with WML

[hotkey]
  command=
  key=
  alt=
  shift=
  ctrl=
[/hotkey]

if it was possible to add a hotkey to a menu_item the action of the menu item
could be pulled up easily by inputting the key combination (which would do its
best not to conflict with default hotkeys, though it could still conflict with
custom hotkey configurations) by simply adding a hotkey tab like that one to
activate the code in the menu item you could avoid the clunky action of right
clicking everytime you want to do something in some of the less-default-like
addons. Each addon would define its own hotkeys, and wouldn't have trouble
with overlap.
