Follow-up Comment #1:
On my gentoo linux box (amd64) I am able to compile Wesnoth using
gettext-0.18.1.1. So either it is some mac specific problem (aka different
compiler doing things differently) or related to the build system used.
Assigning this one to silene anyway.
