Well, I went on a more thorough search for documentation. I didn't find any
direct documentation of the intended design, but I did find the following: the
Formula AI was first ported from SilverTree in BfW 1.5, released in April of
2008. In June 2008 this was then reported as issue 75 in the SilverTree bug
tracker (http://code.google.com/p/silvertree/issues/detail?id=75&can=1). In
July 2008 revision 721 fixed this
(http://code.google.com/p/silvertree/source/detail?r=721).
I also went looking through the data directory for places where this change
might cause problems for mainline. Searching .cfg files for the strings
"formula=" and "$(" turned up no instances of formulas in which both operators
are used. Searching .fai files for the string "/" turned up no instances
which were not already fully parenthesized.
