Follow-up Comment #5, bug #18160 (project wesnoth):

Effectively, r49753 does no longer crash upon this recruitment attemp. But
something else happens: now, in every campaign that I tried (TRoW, SoF, THoT,
just to say some), enemy sides no longer recruit, and the terminal outputs
this (from the first turn of the first scenario of Sceptre of Fire):

(action_result::AI_ACTION_FAILURE) in recruitment by side 2 of unit type
[Swordsman] on any suitable location
20110604 12:24:28 error ai/general: recruitment failed

(action_result::AI_ACTION_FAILURE) in recruitment by side 3 of unit type
[Elvish Archer] on any suitable location

I tried also on a multiplayer map against the AI. I chosen Cynsaun
Battlefield, random sides (the game picked Undead for me and Orcs for the AI,
era Default + Khalifate). Same result:

20110604 12:35:56 error ai/actions: Error #-1
(action_result::AI_ACTION_FAILURE) in recruitment by side 2 of unit type
[Orcish Assassin] on any suitable location
20110604 12:35:56 error ai/general: recruitment failed 

I tried even by removing all add-ons, but nothing changed. I'm not sure if
this is related to the bugfix, or it is a completely new bug, and as such
deserves another report.
