Follow-up Comment #1:
You don't need to get permission to work on any particular bug. I'd suggest
fixing the entire bug and submitting it as a single patch.
Also, you have bundled both random spelling corrections and code
modifications into the same patch. You need to keep each patch focussed on a
single object. Make one patch for spelling corrections, and a second one for
your bug fix.
Keep in mind that an incomplete fix is essentially useless from someone
else's point of view since they have no way of knowing if you will finish it.
