Follow-up Comment #1, bug #17533 (project wesnoth):
I know this bug from 1.8 too and tried to reproduce it in 1.9.14 but couldn't
so far. I'm not sure how because it mostly happened in connection with player
disconnects in 1.8 and even then not regularly.
It mostly happened like this:
1)one player disconnects
2)he logs into the server with exactly the same nickname
3)he clicks observe for his game but he doesn't see the replay of what
happened so far and instead he suddenly has control of his side in turn 1 as
if the game just started
4)OOS error messages start to pop up if he plays around in that turn
This did not happen every time, just in some cases. I'm not sure about the
exact necessary circumstances but one way to work around this problem was to
log in with a changed nickname. It didn't happen in that case so it is somehow
connected with the player name. The server seemed to recognize the name as the
player and put him in control of his side in turn 1 or something like that. Of
course the players could just reload to continue normally so it wasn't a major
problem.
