Works for me, using either SDL 1.2.15 or 1.2.14 on Debian wheezy as of now,
kwin from KDE SC 4.7.4 as my window manager.
Could you check what SDL version you are using? Also, what window manager?
Since you didn't specify whether the permanent toggle worked, you should also
make sure the acceleration factor isn't set to exactly 1.0x in Preferences ->
General, since that will obviously make no difference when toggling
accelerated speed.
