Details:

ye if the first variable in the list is empty the others aren't shown
neigher.

to reproduce: 
start any scenario and use
:debug
then
:lua wesnoth.set_variable("_a","")
and then (i assume there is no variable in the scenario with a more top name)
:inspect
you will see no content of _a which is normal since its empty, but you also
won't see the contents of other variables.


if you change it to 'unit' and then back to 'variables' you'll also get a
warning:
error gui/general: vertical_scrollbar [_vertical_scrollbar]
gui2::tscrollbar_::recalculate: Can't recalculate size, force a window layout
phase.
