Follow-up Comment #2:
It's not really about homebrew, what homebrew takes care of is providing the
dependencies, and cloning the wesnoth git repo. To build it just invokes
scons, using the native C++ compiler. It could just as easily use cmake,
that's what macports does.
The main thing is not to assume that apple implies Xcode.
It seems to build sucessfully now with scons:

I'm not sure at what version clang starts to support Objective-C++ but I guess
that might be the minimum version for wesnoth now on apple.
