Follow-up Comment #1:

Fixed in 1.12 <http://git.io/J4gt6w> and master <http://git.io/zFn7Vw>.

This was a client-side issue: the game simply didn't send the password in the
format expected by the server when creating games, so games created by version
1.12.0 will be forever passwordless. Versions 1.12.1 and later will contain
the fix.

However...

This shouldn't even happen. Perhaps they saw the network transfer progress box
and mistook it for the password prompt?
