Follow-up Comment #1, bug #24139 (project wesnoth):
As far as I can tell, the only reason "instance 1" is even needed is to access
the CVideo object and pass it on to the loading screen. Someone mentioned it
was also needed for the help dialog.
So to make display a singleton, I think you need to remove any need for
accessing it from the main menu, including help, preferences, and anything
else directly accessible from the main menu.
