Follow-up Comment #19, bug #25549 (project wesnoth):
Well, in VC build at least, uninitialised stuff comes out as 0xCC for all
colour values, hence the white. Only when I initialised stuff did it return to
being green as intended. But if there's some other cause I'm missing or some
other way to resolve this, I'm fine with that too.
