I'd rather see a deprecation period, not doing so breaks existing
savegames. That means it will be hard to debug bugs posted. Also people 
testing trunk or a new release will have their stuff broken...

Depending on the new proposal it might be easy to leave the backwards
compability code in the C++ and warn about it being deprecated. Then 2
releases later we can remove the compatibility.
