I know it's a bit late, but I would not convert the whole subversion repository into one huge git repository. Instead I would try to split it up as much as I could. It's easier for people to contribute then and preserves all options for hosting.
If you need an example how to handle a bunch of git repos have a look at the xonotic project [*], which is quite comparable to wesnoth. All their repos are handled by a central wrapper script which is easy to use even for an unexperienced developer. Eric S.
