He is explaining why registration via phpBB's facilities is a much better idea for us if not mandatory. So we now have two choices IMO: 1.) Extend phpBB's ldap support so we can continue to use well established ways to manage user accounts, with our most active developers/administrators behind it. 2.) Extend/harden MediaWiki's registration process and convince our administrators to use that instead. As for the second approach I assume we'll need to tweak the ldap connection anyway to support all the different user attributes for the other (forum, wesnothd, ticket, ...) systems? Based on that need it may be easier to just go with the first approach since we've already customized phpBB anyway. I think as a next step we should identify what (user) attributes we need/want to have in ldap to support authentication against it for the relevant services.
