Dear listmembers,
My husband's ancestor, after arriving in America, was called Charles Broeg.
His children's birth records list him as Karl Alois Broeg. He and his
relatives appear in census records as Broeg, Broege, Brogue and even Brick.
My husband was told that when they first came here they pronounced it more
like Br'e'g in English with a short e sound. They were from Germany. I know
there were a few German Broegs, Broeges and Brögs but I tend to think our
Broeg was more likely an English phonetic spelling of something else,
something more like Breck. Could anyone guess at what the German spelling
might be for our Broeg?
You all know so much more about German pronounciations than I do.
Thank you,
penny b
