 Hello!

If it’s Thursday it must be…? President Obama goes from Mexico City to Port of
Spain tomorrow for the Summit of the Americas where 34 presidents (not Cuba’s)
will gather. The Afropop Secret Service did some advance work for you last week
and our celebration continues this week with highlights from the Latin
Alternative Music Conference recorded in New York City. Artists from Mexico,
Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela, Los Angeles and New York spin new creations
from local and international sources. Fun stuff.

On demand streaming this week is our tribute to the great Wendo Kolosoy, the
godfather of modern Congolese music.

For New Yorkers: highly recommended is kora maestro Toumani Diabaté and his
Symmetric Orchestra this Saturday and Sunday Night at le Poisson Rouge. Also
highly recommended is singer-guitarist-bandleader extraordinaire Habib Koité
Saturday night at Symphony Space. You can also check out Afropop Worldwide
programs coming up on Radio New York 91.5 FM, 11PM Mon-Sat.

Free stuff--get ‘em while they’re hot, CD copies of Les Frères Guissé's
"Yakaar" and Toumast's CD, "Ishumar"!

Thanks to those who are supporting Afropop’s 20th Anniversary Campaign. You are
helping to pay the direct editorial and technical costs of afropop.org and this
e-Newsletter service. Special thanks to Gail Barrington and Sascha Majcenic who
joined as “Afropop Surfers” last week. You can give $12 a year or $52 a year or
more. The important thing is to give back!

And don’t forget to spread the word about the fantastic trip to the Zanzibar

Four Generations of Congo Music
"Papa" Wendo Kolosoy is the centerpiece of this delightful retrospective
program that acts our overdue tribute to the grandfather of Congolese rumba,

exclusive reportage on the first new recording of Wendo's in many years. We
talk to the man and listen in on the recording session. After sitting out most
of the 3-decade Mobutu era, Wendo put together a band of veterans with stories
to tell, and sweet melodies and rhythms to share. Hear live sounds and
interviews from Kinshasa, including Lutumba Simaro and Bana OK, and one of the
kings of the current Congo music scene, Werra Son. era, Wendo has put together

Ryan Skinner on New York's Mande Community, Part 2
Afropop Worldwide's program New York's Mande Diaspora, Part 1: Building
Community tells the story of one of America's most remarkable and musically
rich African enclaves. The program relies on interviews and encounters with,
and recordings by, a long list of artists from Gambia, Mali and Guinea who live
or have lived in the New York area. Links to music and information about those
artists can be found at the end of this feature. The program is built around
the scholarship of Ryan Thomas Skinner, who studied the New York Mande
community between 2000 and 2003, after having done field work in Mali. Banning
Eyre conducted a very long interview with Ryan, to be published in two parts.
