Fyi for those with young ones to look after. This was sent to me from a friend- actually the father of the child. Hi everyone, Some of you got to know about what i went through last week when Opthalmologists at mengo hospital shocked me that My 2.5yr old son's eye (attached) was to be removed immediately as the only alternative to save his life. Much as it is still intact, they will remove it late November after a series of treatment to stop the cancer spread elsewhere. The disease is called Retinoblastoma, it attacks kids bellow five years. It is not easy to detect early but late detection means loss of eye(s) or death. Much as it is not that common, the effects are really regrettable because as a parent i wasn't given any chance to fight for the young man's eye. The Doc at Ruharo Eye Centre in mbarara in charge of these cases further shocked us when he revealed that the young man's eye hasn't been seeing for months!. This cancer eats the kids eyes from inside, no pain, no red eyes, no tears. It forms a tumor inside until the pupil lightens up like you can see in his left eye. I'm not surprised that many people don't know about this disease because the prevalence is quite low. My concern is that news that your baby must loose an eye immediately for survival is not easy to contain. I therefore advise you to always check your little ones eyes regularly, if you have one or when you get one.
