Sam, Thanks for the initiative you and your group have taken to organize Family Day for the West Nile Community. I think it is great idea to bring the people of West Nile together in such social gatherings. I may not be in Uganda to partake in such gatherings but the fact that we can at least try our best to bring the people of West Nile together at share an evening together is something I truly appreciate. However, I have some observations to make and I would like to state that they are my personal views and it they may not be right or entertained or considered, I take full responsibility. I fully think and believe that the arrangement for this occasion is in its final state, and it will be in Kampala where most of participants will most likely be people around Kampala and surrounding areas or people in the urban areas around Kampala. I would like to suggest that next time such event is organized the venue should be in West Nile so that at least the local people in West Nile can also participate in some of these events. I think these are some of the avenues of reaching and connecting with the ground in West Nile. We on the WNF have a lot of good ideas we have discussed but sharing these ideas with the people on the ground has still eluded us up to now. so such events could be used to communicate with and to the people on the ground to share the ideas WNF is discussing in our forums which the local people on the ground to not have access to. Secondly, I know most of you who are volunteering also have your families and other businesses to attend to and every time you get to gather with people like this should be an opportunity to discuss some of the issues of building the structures for the WNF even though I am aware that there is currently a voluntary administrative committee. The draft Strategic Plan has been sitting idle for such a long time, however WNF up to this day since its incorporation as a community organization does not have a working document. I think it is about time that the volunteers on the ground get together face to face and iron out the draft document. We should always think that our collective ability and contribution can carry us further than our individual abilities and contributions.
I also would like to suggest that, on this family occasion we should recognize some of our community members who have contributed selflessly to the cause of our people in West Nile, causes which I think benefit the whole West Nile community. I have in mind two people/groups of people. The first is the people/person/group that brought the abuse of our local tobacco farmers and exposed the mistreatment of those tobacco farmers which led to the legal redress action being instituted. I think these people have done something which should have been done long ago and which I believe is going to change the way the tobacco farmers operate in West Nile. The people who brought up that issue and the lawyers who took up the issues the represent the tobacco farmers I think deserve recognition. Secondly, I would like to suggest we should recognize Christine Munduru for her selflessness in taking up the issue of the death cases of our sisters, one in Arua Hospital and the the other in the Fertility clinic in Kampala. She single handedly has lobbied for the payment of the lawyers in this case which could have a far reaching impact in our community/society. Her idea of the Science Cafe to educate and empower people also needs to be commended, even if it has not been instituted in the West Nile for the rural community to benefit from. If I am off the point or have said anything contradictory please accept my apologies for it is not in my intention. Wish you all the best in this Holiday period.
