Can West Nilers also sue the government for the loss of lives and property during the insurgency? -------------------- Court permits war victims to sue government By Ephraim Kasozi (email the author <javascript:void(0);>) The Kampala High court has granted four people permission to sue government seeking for compensation over loss of lives and property during several insurgencies in the Teso region.
Kampala High Court, before Registrar John Eudes Keitirima, granted permission to Edimu Paprus Imodot, John Enyangu, Stephen Osigire and Max Apedu to represent 102 people from Teso seeking for compensation orders. They are seeking for compensation worth Shs4.5 billion. “Application is granted to the group because they have similar interests,” ruled Mr Keitirima. This is the third group of war claimants granted permission to sue government for compensation since the end of the insurgency. In other cases, over 200,000 people sued for compensation over cattle rustling and lost lives, while another group of 20 people are seeking Shs1.2 billion in compensation, both currently pending negotiation before court. The groups are all seeking for compensation for their houses, cars, livestock and household property that were destroyed during the war between government and rebel forces between 1986 and late 1990s. Mr Omongole representing the war victims, told court that it is the constitutional right of his clients to get compensated. The group is also seeking a court declaration over the discriminative act of the Attorney General to compensate Acholi war victims, leaving out the Iteso.
