Good tidings for Africa's eLearning aficionados The good news is that the Call for Papers for eLearning Africa 2012 closes on Friday, January 9th, 2012, so there is still time to submit an application to present a paper, host a workshop, give a demonstration or showcase goods and services at the accompanying exhibition. The conference will take place from 23rd to 25th May, 2012 in Cotonou, Benin, a country making many improvements in ITC infrastructure, service delivery and education. Our end of year newsletter surveys eLearning developments across the continent and offers a glimpse at the issues on people's lips: from rural entrepreneurship to education and sustainability, the very theme of eLearning Africa 2012. Suite 2. A knowledge economy begins at the grass roots The telecentre movement is nothing new. As an effective service for improving the livelihoods of rural communities, it is a model which exists the world over. Picture a telecentre in Africa, and the image of a small building where people can go to get access to a computer, phone, fax, go online or charge a mobile phone springs to mind. This conventional scenario still exists in many areas, but in several parts of Africa, the telecentre concept is evolving into something much more. One to one computing in Ethiopia The notion of transforming education through one-to-one computing is currently a hot topic across Africa. Initiatives are underway in various countries including Nigeria, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Ghana. But is one-to-one computing really possible for every child, and is it the most appropriate and cost effective use of resources? After a lively session at the recent ONLINE EDUCA conference in Berlin, David Hollow a founding director of Jigsaw Consult in England examines the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative in Ethiopia. The director, Okafor Toochukwu Patrick has been attending eLearning Africa since its inception and has watched how people across the Continent are adopting ICT tools in ever more creative and cooperative ways. On his recent trip to Germany for the ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN conference, he caught up with eLearning Africa and shared his thoughts on SPED's work, eLA and the value of technology as the driving force of education. News from South Africa: the United Nations Climate Change meeting Originally scheduled to end on Friday, December 9th, after twelve days of intense talks, the COP17 climate change meeting went into overtime until negotiators eventually came to an agreement in the early hours of Sunday, December 11th 2011. Governments the world over are lauding the progress made on the continuation of the Kyoto Protocol, the Green Climate Fund and the new market mechanisms. However, some NGOs, environmental activists and other lobbyists have raised concerns that the COP17 outcomes are not in the best interests of all nations and that these resolutions will do little to lessen carbon emissions or reduce environmental degradation. Is the new climate deal a cop out, and what does it mean for sustainable development on the Continent?
