Dear Roger, Thanks for the "correction" of us using a word that is often used in different circumstances, viz., when someone has passed onto another plain.
Coming from a different understanding of grief and pain, my "misuse" of the word was on two fronts: 1. That Dr. Atiku is in pain - thus, it was in a way commiserating with him. 2. That having lost part of his left arm (seeing from the photos) he would, in my guess, be in some form of grief over the loss of his arm. In this sense I was considering a general meaning such as here: http://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/condolences. I suppose, we all are grateful that he is well and kicking and even had the courage to communicate his predicament to the NET. We all wish him a quick recover from the physical wounds, though the emotional ones might take a little longer. Anyhow, as they say, this is "a borrowed" language and usages indeed change.
