Dear All,I have written alot about this before in this forum and discussed the topic with actions that can be taken and unfortunately we always come in to write on these accidents post facto! Like I said the issue lies entirely on bad management of these bus companies. As concerned stakeholders who use these services in one way or another let us make our contribution and make our voice heard. Organizing ourselves is quite easy,WestNile Digest is already one platform that we can effectively use and everyone here can contribute. If nothing tangible comes out of this forum in form of a memo/note to the bus operators within one week from now, then we should all together stop lamenting about the accidents when we ourselves cannot even initiate serious action.Everyone should post the substantial analysis noting their root cause analysis of these accidents and these will form the gist of the matter in our memo/note to the bus operators. Any accident has a root cause, sometimes ranging from poor management, negligence, oversight, mechanical failure, bad judgement, training, recklessness, etc. My analysis of the Ugandan transportation sector with particular reference to the Arua Kampala route is generally bad management which has a cascading effecting through the operations of the bus companies. I am sure we can have accurate statistics from the Police on the causes of accidents. Through this memo/note we will have made our voice heard,a copy will be sent to the Minister of Transport,Inspector General of Police and the Speaker of Parliament who we shall ask to circulate it to all MPs in Uganda.Hopefully it will influence them in making the laws more stringent.
The leadership in this forum shall be asked to deliver this to the bus operators and the other agencies of government for action. Why can't people on the ground organize BOYCOT of these buses for one month? Let these people understand the business ramifications of neglecting customer voices and concerns? What sort of business man/woman will not understand the value of customers who have made these people what they are? If we do nothing, these craziness, recklessness, over-speeding, killing passengers will continue. We are always quick in blaming the government, why can we not take action on simple matters like this? Do we need anyone to come and tell us this is wrong and it has got to stop. If the bus operators and drivers value the life of their customers, THEY MUST STOP THESE RECKLESS ACCIDENTS. The government should impose requirement of speed governors and regularly inspect the busses for road worthiness. Unfortunately you can not enforce rules when the grossly under paid cops have to take bribes to make ends meet. There is also the problem with roads. If you saw the state of the road between Luwero and Kuruma and the way traffic compete for little Tarmac while avoiding the huge potholes, you can appreciate why the government is mostly responsible (I know the road from karuma to Arua is great and tempting for fast driving).
