Subject: [WestNileNet] Help needed - Makerere University contacts

Greetings,

We would be grateful if you could help direct Navin Parek to the
appropriate department / department head / lecturer/professor at
Makerere University responsible for Industrial design to discuss
opportunities of collaborating on a project for designing tools to
benefit persons with disabilities in Uganda as detailed in Navin's
email below.

By way of introduction, Navin is a Canadian of East Indian origin who
was introduced to me a few weeks ago by the Ugandan High Commissioner
to Canada at a meeting of Ugandan Canadians (of African and Asian
origin) as well as friends of Uganda to discuss the celebration of
Uganda's 50 years of independence. Navin was unanimously selected as
the chairman of the committee that will plan the month long
celebration of Uganda's 50'th independence anniversary in Ottawa,
Canada.

Even though Navin is not a Ugandan Asian, never lived in Uganda or
Africa, he was touched by the plight of disabled Ugandans in Kasese
when he visited Uganda as a tourist some few years back.

Please respond to Navin Parek <[email protected]> directly and with a
copy to the listserve you are subscribed to (i.e. westnilenet or
Kobokonet).

Sincerely,

Charles Male

Good morning, Charles.

I enjoyed our chat the day before. It gave us an opportunity to get to know
each other a little better and exchange views on areas of mutual interest.

One of the matters we talked about is the project, "Design Innovation for
Disability in Kasese" which is a collaborative initiative between CanUgan
Disability Support Project ( <http://www.canugan.org> www.canugan.org) and
Carleton University's READ Initiative and the School of Industrial Design.
Students from the school will work on designing products related to
disability in the rural African district of Kasese in Uganda. The main focus
will be on the tricycle and related products that will be built locally in
Kasese utilizing very simple manufacturing means. There are design
opportunities for improving the existing product, associated products and
tools and fixtures. CanUgan as an NGO organization has already funded the
production of 48 tricycles that have been used by people with disabilities
(PWD) in Kasese. The project is suitable for students who are interested in
co-developing design with people in developing countries taking into
consideration the context of their cultural, economic, environmental and
technical knowledge and input.

There are two key components of the project. In November 2012, we will hold
a mini-conference in Ottawa that will bring together four persons with
disabilities (PWDs) from Kasese, few experts in the field and students and
faculty from Carleton University's School of Industrial Design. The event
will allow Ugandan delegates to share personal experiences and perspectives
with experts and students about the design and uses of tricycles and other
devices.

The second component will see a visit to Kasese In January 2013 by a group
of 5-6 students from Carleton University who will have chosen this project
as their term assignment. The head of the School of Industrial Design and I
will accompany the students.

During this visit, we would very much like to meet with knowledgeable people
in academic institutions to share views and learn from them. This will be an
important part as Canadians will have lots to learn from Ugandan academics.
This is where, we will greatly any assistance you can give us in connecting
with Makerere University faculty members.

I hope I have given enough information; but, if you have any question,
please contact me.

Warm regards!

Navin
