Dear brothers and sisters,
Thanks for your brilliant ideas and contributions. *Large Scale
Agricultural Business*
requires systematic and deliberate planning. If IDPs' who have been living
in camps for nearly two decades have suddenly become suppliers of food to
World Food Program (WFP), there is so much that we need to understand, how
have
they done this? What magic formula have they used? Is it purely an accident
or fortune?
a) The chaos in the region brought a lot of financial and educational
investments in the region during the war. There has also been massive
public education in the region. May be these investments have turned
around the lives of the IDPs'.
b) On the contrary, why is our region lagging behind?
i) is it lack of land or is it lack of creative skills in using the
small land?
ii) Is our cultural practices a problem and holding us down?
iii) is it lack of education where farmers have very limited skills,
tools etc?
iv) How can farmers in our region get beyond subsistence farming?
c) While I am not encouraging/promoting single crop production, diversified
agriculture is the way to go. I am pretty sure there are many crops that
can be explored and experimented (Citrus Fruits, Soya Beans, SimSim,
Sorghum,
beans, cassava, Grapes, animals, etc).
d) As South Sudan economy recovers from several years of wars, the
opportunities for agricultural products in South Sudan and Eastern DR Congo
are so abundant.
e) The opportunity cost of not taking action or not making right decision
and choices are too high. There is a proverb that says " making a bad
decision is better than no decision at all".
Thank you for all your brilliant ideas. How do we take these ideas to our
elected leaders from this region or translate these ideas into actionable
plans and strategy?
