Dear friends
The scanty information I got is that the accident was caused as a result of
front tyre burst, and that the the driver of this ill fated bus tried to keep
the bus on road after the tyre burst but because he couldnt do much, the
vehicle veered from one side of the raod to the other until it finally crashed.
For some of us who have either seen accidents caused as a result of front tyre
burst, or been in vehicle's whose front tyre has burst (I have been), you will
remember that there is very little that a driver can do.
The question that still has not been answered is was the bus on a high speed
(in excess of the prescribed 80kms/hr)? Could it be that the tyres of the bus
had expired, not at the look of it, but as the tyre manufacturers indicated
based on the period of the manufacture?
When I heard of the tyre burst, I vaguely remembered an article that was posted
about tyre safety a while ago and decided to search. The search result is that
the article "Tire safety-Drivers should read this" was posted by George Afi
Obitre-Gama posted on April 12th 2011 .
Do you who have a vehicle and or drive vehicles, Even if you do not drive but
travel in, especially PSV's, I believe there are a number of important things
to learn and remember from this article. We can ably notify from an informed
point of view and even demand the bus owners to fit tyres that have not expired
if we notice that the tyres have expired etc, etc.
I think that this is one of the solutions to minimizing accidents caused due to
tyre burst.
I am going to forward the article Afi posted for the benefit of some of you who
either deleted it or joined after Afi posted the article I have refered to.
Over to you

Subject: [WestNileNet] Bus Accidents
Dear friends,
I have taken time to be on the net. I had wanted to write something about
transport costs in West Nile region, but only to be shocked by the tragic
accident involving California Bus. I wanted to "think aloud" to ask why a
passenger from Arua to Nebbi pays 10.000= to 12.000= (for 77kms) compared to
6.000= from Hoima to Kiboga (77kms) yet the fuel prices don't vary very much.
Arua Nebbi route is busier than Hoima Kiboga, so I expected Arua Nebbi to be
cheaper. Economists explain for us. I have traavelled widely in Uganda but
until recently it was only West Nile travellers who were subjected to serious
searching by police and security agencies at Pakwach. Who will protect us?
Back to these accidents. Accidents are not only a West Nile occurrence but I
will limit myself to the region. Surely something must be done. It is not
enough for bus owners to meet funeral expenses and fines from Transport Board.
Imagine dependants left by the deceased. And there are people who are disabled
for life. How do they support their families? There are more questions than
answers. We demand more from these bus owners. It is so painful. Tomorrow it
can be me or you.
What can be done colleagues? We are not going to continue dying on roads like
this. It is not enough to check drivers for competence in driving. They need
regular mental checks. How do their employers treat them. Are they stressed?
Imagine a driver who has intentions of committing suicide. Of course he will
not take a rope but crush a bus. No stone should be left unturned as we try to
find solutions to road carnage in the country.
Thank you.
