(Photo: Kay Amin with Idi Amin in Berlin, 1974) Uganda's First Lady Kay Adroa Amin [my mother], from 1944 to 14th August 1974 aged 30.
Born to the Archdeacon Reverend of West Nile diocese, she studied education at Makerere University. When Kay met Idi Amin she was working as an announcer at Radio Uganda where she used to write and broadcast radio programs. They married before Amin became President and had 4 children (three sons; Hussein Lumumba Amin, Adam Madira Amin, Muzamil Mao Amin, and her only daughter Ramla Amin who is actually Kays eldest child). She stayed with Amin until 1974 the year she passed away. As First Lady her public appearances were mainly involved hosting foreign dignitaries, particularly their spouses. She organized events for children and supported womens organizations. She also encouraged women to work rather than remain full time housewives as she encouraged Idi Amin to hire more enlightened women into public service. Kay Amin was literally the woman behind the early successes of the Amin government. She advised Amin on governance and got him to appoint the most competent ministers and senior civil servants. Her brilliance and guidance for Amins government quickly made her a target of the anti-Amin effort. She died horrifically on August 14th, 1974 when she was found dismembered in the trunk of a vehicle belonging to a doctor who had committed suicide. She was laid to rest next to a beautiful stone-built church in Maracha county, West Nile, her fathers ancestral village. -- Hussein Juruga Lumumba Amin Kampala, Uganda
