The root causes of conflict in developing countries include political,
economic, and social inequalities. Extreme poverty, economic stagnation,
poor government services, high unemployment, and individual economic
incentives to fight.
Privileged groups may also be motivated to fight to protect their
privileges against attack from relatively deprived groups.
The private motivation hypothesis shows that in most instances, greed
actually supercedes political grievance as the true cause for conflict.
