A group calling itself “We Save Uganda Now (SUN)” says it has officially
launched a guerrilla war to end the 30-year rule of President Yoweri
Museveni.

“We have begun efforts to free our Uganda from tyranny,” the group’s
commander a one “Maji Moto” said.

“We all know that constitutionalism died a long time ago and was finally
laid to rest on the 19th February 2016. May its soul not rest until
constitutionalism is restored.”

SUN has also claimed responsibility of the March 5, 2016 attack on a police
station in Kapchorwa district.

The attack happened after 12:15am as coordinated by “two platoons of
commandos” from the guerrilla group.

Police story

According to Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, the attackers killed
Sergeant Hakim Kaddu posted at Kapchorwa Central Police Station and
critically wounded other three police officers who were on duty including;
Stephen Labeja, Rukundo Junior and Inspector of Police, Jeremiah Musumba
Kayemba.

Grace Patrick Odokonyero, the Kapchorwa district police commander, said
about 10 gunmen attacked the police station at about 12:20am in a move to
rescue their colleague, John Chemusaka.

Chemusaka is among suspects who were arrested on February 29 following an
attack on UPDF soldier and a staff of Uganda Wildlife Authority in Kween
district where one gun was stolen.

Michael Odongo, the Sebei regional police spokesperson told Uganda Radio
Network, one of the gunmen was also killed in the gunfire exchange with
police.

According to Enanga, the “gang of criminals” operates in the Mt. Elgon
Forest area and is commanded by a UPDF deserter, Julius Chelimo.

Chelimo was arrested by Police, following the rampant aggravated robberies
along the Eastern axis of Mbale to Karamoja in 2014, and handed over to the
Military for prosecution, had ever arrested Chelimo.

He, however, escaped from Makindye Military barracks.

SUN attack on Kapchorwa

The group’s attack was facilitated by a Police Officer, PC Labu Siraje, a
born of the area in Ngangata village, Kaptanya Sub-county, Kapchorwa
District, attached to the Field Force Unit.

“We would like to state that our operation was successful beyond our
expectation, and would like to thanks population for their support but our
gratitude goes to the men that participated in this mission and we give
thanks to the Lord our God who ensured that all our brave combatants
returned safely,” SUN said.

According to their account, last Saturday two platoons of SUN commandos
arrived at the vicinity of the station at around 10:15 pm for an attack
that was supposed to be effected at 3.30 am.

After positioning themselves, they waited for zero hour; their objective
was to acquire arms and ammunition.

However, an opportunity availed itself just after midnight and their
commander who identifies himself as “Maji Moto” gave the strike command.

Soldiers guarding the post began leaving their post at around 11:30pm and
by 12:15am; only nine soldiers were left on guard.

“We wiped them out and proceeded to our objective point. We completely
overwhelmed the few officers in the station. They were so confused that one
officer run head on towards our strike force asking for help. He thought we
were UPDF. We later released him (his name was LABU) we just took his gun
and uniform.”

“Our strike force had divided themselves into three groups; force A was the
lead strike force; strike force 2 was for carrying the Arms/ ammunition
from the armoury and strike force 3 was to secure the roads to and from the
station and our withdrawal routes- we had 3 routes out 2 were diversionary.”

“We would like to categorically state that Commander “Maji Moto” did not
lose any men in these operation, the only man reported killed at the
station we found at the station being booked by the police sergeant and was
got in the cross fire as we advanced to armory.”

“We would like to thank the Uganda army who has helped us immensely by
arresting and beating the locals with impunity and inducing more support
for our cause from the population.”

SUN claims to have acquired 35 guns and over 320 round of munitions in this
single operation, contrary to the police statement.

The group says the arrested officer [Labu Siraje] who allegedly assisting
them is a scapegoat.

“He was picked simply because he is an FDC supporter.”

They also denied links with criminals led by UPDF deserter Chelimo saying
it is a lie and a spin by state media.

“There is no Chelimo in our force neither were they [Chelimo’s gang]
involved in this operation.”

“We released some political prisoners who had been held without charges
since and before the elections most have chosen to join the struggle to
save our country.”

SUN claims to be supported by Citizens for the defense of the constitution
[C4DC].
