Dear Facilities Manager, Tuesday March 22, 2016 was World Water Day. Water is the essential building block of life playing a key role in production of food, human health and sustaining natural environment. Water is a critical and finite resource with increasing pressure on this resource. According to UN-Water, 3.5 billion people globally remain without full access to water. The global population is expected to rise from 7 billion in 2012 to over 9 billion in 2050 further increasing pressure on limited water resource. A UNEP - SBCI report states that buildings use 25% of global water. Facilities Managers can play a role in helping reduce water wastage and conserve water in their facilities. Here are highlights of a few water conservation tips from Alliance for Water Efficiency: *1. **Audit & Benchmark* Undertake water usage audit of your facility. Use this information to identify water saving opportunities and establish saving benchmark. Remember, if it cannot be measured, it cannot be managed. *2. **Building Systems* Install water efficient fittings and fixtures in bathrooms and showers. Water efficient toilet flushing, sinks for hand washing, and showering facilities represent great opportunities for water savings. Laundry and kitchen functions also provide great opportunities for water savings. Focus on areas where there are opportunities to reduce flow of water, improve water efficiency, recycle and reuse water. Replace water cooled building equipment with air cooled equipment where feasible. Cooling towers and wash bays are big water guzzlers. Look for options to reduce water consumption and recycling opportunities. *3. **Landscaping* Landscape with water-wise landscaping principles. Use plants and material that are native for the region and do not require much water to thrive. Use ground cover to reduce water evaporation. Use water efficient irrigation system and water early morning or in the evening to reduce water evaporation. *4. **Staff Education* Educate staff about the importance of using less water. Every toilet flush uses 6 - 9 litres of water. Negotiate water efficiency KPI with your staff departments and recognise them for their water efficiency initiatives. Call to Action: Every drop counts! Develop a water conservation plan at your workplace and use the practical following tips to conserve water at home: [image: Tips to Save Water] Regards, Alf FM Tribe is a platform for Quantum FM training alumni to connect and share. * Alf Nathoo* BA, Msc(FM), MBIFM, FMCMI, MBIC * Phone: *+254 20 2147887/ 8 / 9 * Mobile:* +254 733 672 624 * E Mail:* [email protected] [image: cid:[email protected]]
