A Daily Monitor news report says a group attacked a military facility near
Gulu town yesterday. They broke into the armory and took eight guns.
This comes after another group attacked villages in Yumbe district and
abducted young men, one of whom allegedly tried to escape captivity and was
shot dead.
It is worth noting that few politicians have come out publicly to say
anything including condemnation of such acts.
Let me make it clear that it is never something to be taken lightly when
weapons are stolen from a military facility or people are abducted by an
armed group.
Abductions are a known tactic to strengthen rebel ranks.
Joseph Kony was notorious for the behaviour. It is also known that the
famous NRM kadogo"s ('the small ones' in swahili), these abductee boys and
girls were then trained, given weapons, and forced to fight (among other
duties) for Museveni during his 1980-86 rebellion.
So if the recent attacks were mere thugs who needed a gun or two for theft
as we are being told, wouldn't it have been easier that they waylay a
police officer or private security guard and just pluck the weapon or two
from him or her while asleep as Gen. David Sejusa once said?
History says the NRM started with 8 guns. Where is the UNLA government
today?
I call upon the leaders on all sides to come out and condemn these groups.
Because regardless of recent political grievances, the people of this
country have no intention of being ruled by another rebel whom we know
nothing about. I once said Ugandans don't need another person who will then
also tell them 'Where were you when we were fighting?'.
I stated that I am prepared to join the fight against any such "Kony"
groups myself if the situation became serious, rather than be happy as some
social media activists seemingly are because someone is fighting their
sworn political enemy Museveni and so a rebellion excites them.
Every Ugandan should be maturely concerned and alert to the long term
consequences of such developments. Particularly in the districts where
recent security developments took place. This includes the Rwenzori region.
The words "Elections were stolen" has now become the legitimacy benchmark
established in 1980 for any opportunist to start war.
Yet if it isn't a revolution BY THE PEOPLE, why be content as someone else
now also tries to take your authority, rights, voice, and your vote again?
Political grievances against Mr. Museveni shouldn't blind anyone. You the
civilian people of this country with your known legitimate leaders should
start establishing yourselves as the first priority for this country.

He might have other political flaws, but if you follow closely, you'll
notice that first Mr. Obama made a trip to Cuba, a country in conflict with
the US since the 1961 invasion of Cuba and the Cuba missile crisis.
Then he was in Vietnam, a country against which the US waged and lost a
devastating war that lasted 19 years (from 1955 to the fall of Saigon in
1975).
And yesterday Mr. Obama was in Hiroshima where the US dropped the first
ever atomic bomb on 6th August 1945.
The significance of these historic "firsts" for a sitting US President
shouldn"t be ignored as no other US president felt that it was worth their
time.
