In my copy of the Standards they do.  See the node `Command Variables'.
My copy was last updated `March 13, 1998'.  I'm sure there are newer
copies around.  Was this text deleted?  I'd be suprised.

I used to agree, but I got a lot of requests for this feature.  So
finally I implemented it.

I generally recommend that people support both mechanisms.  It isn't
very hard.
