This info probably won't be very useful, but anyway...
Yesterday I was getting the index of a very large ftp server with very
long directories with wget 1.7 on windows. That is, I configured wget in
order to walk the whole ftp site, but with a -Anotexistantextension in
order to not let it get any file, just leave behind the .listing in any
directory.
Some hours and about 1.7M of logfile (with -v) later I got

==> SYST ... done.    ==> PWD ... wget: strdup: Not enough memory.

The machine definitively had still lots of memory free (at least 50MB).
Unfortunately I haven't been able to reproduce the problem in any way,
with or without -d.
Sorry for not including more info, there's a NDA problem here.
I'll keep the -d on that connection for some time, if something crops up
I'll post it.
