Because:

a) It is not a Linux box, so forget about /etc/ld.so.conf and
   ldconfig;

b) The whole "problem" is that SSL libraries were *not* in
   /usr/local/ssl/lib/, but in /usr/local/lib/.

Please follow the discussion a bit more carefully before presenting a
non-sequitur Linux-oriented position.
