The fact is that I haven't done any real maintenance work in years,
with some exceptions when I found the time. I've just finished (the
civil alternative to) the obligatory army service and might have some
time for free software.

I plan to go through the backlog of patches posted to the Wget mailing
list and at least apply those that I can validate to fix bugs.

In the long run, Wget should have a real maintainer who can devote
more time to maintaining the code and the community than I could. The
best way to candidate is to demonstrate the willingness to work on the
code.

As for Automake, there are good reasons why Wget is not using it.
Makefiles generated by Automake are a horrendous mess that is almost
impossible to understand or edit by hand for customization. They are
so bad that they make things generated imake/xmkmf pale in comparison.
If I have any say in the issue, I'd prefer to keep Wget Automake-free.
Of course, that will ultimately be up to the new maintainer(s).
