I get where you're going...:)
I guess that's why you need a more flexible framework for authentication
management (both on the cmd line and in the .wgetrc file).
In any case the difference between the --http-[user|passwd] and the URL
notation should be mentioned in the manual for the time being until some
mechanism is in place.
