I'm not Doug, but since I just recently made libcurl capable of using GnuTLS (as an option instead of OpenSSL) I think can fill in some info:
GnuTLS is alive and it is working. It is even documented somewhat better than OpenSSL (which isn't saying a lot, I know).
Converting an OpenSSL-using program into using GnuTLS instead isn't very hard.
