TODAY'S WORD: disappearing e-mail

Disappearing e-mail is an e-mail message created with a distribution
management tool that allows the sender to control a recipient's
access to the e-mail after it has been sent. For example, a user or
company may stipulate a limit on how long a message will be held on
the server, or whether a message can be copied, printed, forwarded,
or saved. Some distribution management tools allow a sender to
retrieve or "unsend" a message from a recipient's inbox, even if the
recipient has opened the mail.

According to Omniva (formerly called Disappearing Inc), their
distribution management tool, Policy Manager, is the electronic
equivalent of a message written with disappearing ink. An e-mail
message can be sent with a stored encryption key that can be set to
expire after a certain amount of time. A message sent with Omniva may
disappear from the recipient's inbox after the expiration date as
passed.

There are several other distribution management tools available,
including Atabok's VCNMail 2.0 and Authentica's MailRecall. Larger
companies, including Lotus Notes and Microsoft Outlook, are also
including distribution management features in their most recent
versions.

Some distribution management tools allow the sender to revise an
e-mail that has been sent, a capability that would be appreciated by
a sender who had succumbed to e-mail rage or by an e-mail newsletter
editor who discovered a serious error after the mail had been sent.
Experts predict that disappearing e-mail will play a role in digital
rights management because there are legal, as well as business or
personal reasons, for protecting message data.

ASK THE EXPERT

Dear Ask the Expert,

I want to create a database that allows me to analyze our present
storage management and project future storage needs. I'll be using an
SQLServer 7.0 and an SQLServer 2000 with locks, parentals, and stored
procedures. Can I get reasonable results just by populating the
database with summary data?
