The contest winnners are...

Just before Valentine's Day, we asked people reading our home page to tell us how they knew they were overdoing it in one of three areas:

- "I knew I was spending too much time on the Internet when..."

- "I knew I was spending way much time at work when..."

- "I knew I was really a geek when..."

Replies began arriving shortly thereafter and, a few days ago, we picked the winners. You'll find their names here...

Winners received a TechTarget baseball cap. (Fortunately, none of our winners had a propellor head!)

Why we have math definitions

You may or may not have noticed that we define such terms as "irrational number," "cardinality," "logarithm," "exponent," and "power-of-10 notation." Why, you might ask, would I want to look up one of these terms? Probably you wouldn't very often but they do give the Editor for this site (an English major) a feeling of comfort that the knowledge about all of these is close at hand. These basic terms pop up occasionally in more complex technology terms and we want to make it possible to locate them quickly without having to go back to school (or, more likely, to take a crazy guess).

You'll find most of our math terms listed in the Major Categories on our home page under "Computer Fundamentals." Here's a sample definition:

We have also just added a handy lookup page for Mathematical Symbols.

 The whatis.com quiz:

Last chance at the zoo quiz

We're quite sure you know what a mouse is. But what do you know about the packet monkey? Are you familiar with the infamous dogcow? We have left up one of our most difficult quizzes (a mixed-bag of IT terms that sound like animal names) for those readers who may have missed it. Good luck!
Take the quiz and let us know how you do.
