Traditionally applied to custom-tailored clothing, the term has been extended to information technology, especially for software consulting services. Typically, software consulting companies offer packaged (already invented and generally applicable) software and bespoke software for client needs that can't be satisfied by packaged software. In the U.S., bespoke software is often called custom or custom-designed software. Bespoke is a form derived from bespeak, which was used as early as 1583 to refer to the ordering of goods. ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: Henry Poole & Co. offers bespoke clothing for men on Savile Row . http://www.pooles-of-savile-row.co.uk/ Bespoke Sofas Sidney is an example of bespoke sofas in Sidney, Australia . http://www2.tpg.com.au/users/bespoke/ In Alfreton, England, Stonebroom Software is a company that offers specialist and bespoke software . http://www.stonebroom.co.uk/homeindex.htm In Chester, Lintel Software is another company offering bespoke software development . http://www.lintel.co.uk/bespoke.html ______________________ CORRECTION |Word-of-the-Day: T-SQL Thanks to several readers, we learned that Sybase contributed to the development of T-SQL and we have changed our definition to mention that. Sybase's SQL server product (as well as Microsoft's) supports T-SQL. We removed the paragraph showing the most common T-SQL statements because they are really the most common SQL statements.
