MOLAP is often used as part of a data warehouse application. A multidimensional database allows data to be stored so that it can be accessed using a number of different criteria such as time span, price range, season, geography, and other characteristics. For example, someone would be able to ask "How many Aptivas have been sold in Nebraska so far this year?" In most OLAP implementations that use a multidimensional database, it is treated as a relational database with a star schema and known as ROLAP. However, some newer OLAP software supports a more direct implementation, known as MOLAP.
